明新冰菓店 sits on Xinsheng Street in Fenglin, Hualien, its signatures the “Mingxin Three Treasures” — three-bean shaved ice, lemon juice, and old-time ice cream, all hand-made. One diner said “it lives up to its name — the frozen lemon juice is super refreshing, perfect for a summer Hualien trip, the red-bean ice and ice cream are tasty too, a must-check-in in Fenglin,” another “the hand-made ice cream and lemon juice are both great, a must-visit in Fenglin, especially in the hot summer.”

The walls hold old photos and a shop-history poster reading “founded in 1965,” one of the few old shops in Fenglin able to make its own ice, having witnessed the town from its bustling 20,000-plus-population heyday to now. Some note “the menu is small, the shaved-ice options too few and not that tasty, and the owners could be livelier — every visit feels a bit tense,” so set expectations before ordering.
